Between 10and5 - User Interface and Interaction design

Between 10and5
Comprehensive User Interface and Interaction re-design of a South African digital publishing site.
Group project - Megan Campbell, Marette Theron, Joshua Venter, Morena Mallane & Leensa Ghenti
The following tools were used for the completion of this project: Adobe XD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator & Optimal Workshop
THE PROBLEM
The content on the websites’ homepage does not offer a clear indication or sense of navigation for their users. This means that users can get overwhelmed by the amount of different content they encounter as soon as they enter the website.
NEEDS STATEMENT
Between 10 and 5 users need an easy and simple way of uploading their work onto the Between 10 and 5 site.
CHOSEN RESEARCH METHODS
Competitive analysis, Heuristic evaluation, Card sort (open and closed), Usability testing of prototypes
Our groups Miro Board for collaborative planning and testing
RESEARCH FINDINGS
After conducting various research methods, the following re-design recommendations were made:

1. Improve global and local navigation bars to be accessible constantly throughout the site. Simplify navigation bars to make them less intrusive and have them correspond to user needs.
2. Redesign of the video content page to make it more engaging and specific to its users. Also better optimize the homepage to highlight video content.
3. Make it easier for and motivate artists to submit their work.
4. Simplify content structuring - homepage
5. Increase variability among the pages so that they are easily distinguishable.
6. Reduce the intrusiveness of the site by making the design more soft and inviting to the user (improve the use of fonts, colours, type, spatial proximity
and layout).
7. More interactive design that inspires users.
8. Improve the ‘visibility of systems status’ by ensuring the clickable buttons are obvious to users.

PERSONAS
As a group, we developed two personas based on our research of the current Between 10and5 site and their target market. The following four user types were identified : Browsers, Uploaders, Shoppers and Readers.
We combined these user types and developed the following two user personas.
DESIGN ITERATIONS
This brief followed an iterative process through low fidelity, mid fidelity & high fidelity design. Between each design phase, usability testing and heuristics evaluations were conducted in order to ensure that each phase was more usable than the last.
THE FINAL OUTCOME
Our final solution for the Between 10and5 website was the creation of two simple user journeys, showing their step-by-step process on the website.
